IEPs and AT

An IEP is an individualized educational plan for a student who attends a public school, and receives special education and related services. The IEP team will determine the AT needs if there are any for a student through assessment. It is important to consider what the student is unable to do due to their disability, what are their biggest educational obstacles are, and their usual environments in which they are in before considering specific pieces of AT. Once a need for AT has been identified it is mandatory to state it in the student's IEP so that the needed AT can be made readily available. Sometimes a student may need to trial several devices before finding the right one.
