Meeting Student Goals

As I mentioned in my post before an IEP is a legally binding educational program designed to meet a child's individual needs. My next five posts will touch on how certain AT devices can help students meet their IEP goals.

Example 2:

Present Level of Academic Achievement and Functional Performance:

Eric participates in regular education programs for his academic subjects. His hand strength is limited and he fatigues quickly when doing any handwriting task. Civics and English homework are a particular problem because of lengthy assignments and reports that need to be completed.

Annual Goal: Eric will use a computer or portable word processor to complete 100% of his assignments in 10th grade English and Civics classes.

Above is a portable word processor that Eric could use to alleviate his limited hand strength. This will enable Eric to write his ideas down faster and more efficiently as well as let him do so across multiple environments due to its portability.

Above is a talking word processor which could also be a viable option for Eric. Talking word processors make the writing process more simple, and will read back what is written to the student. This provides a more enjoyable writing experience and diminishes the reliance of physical capabilities for writing.

Both of these devices will help Eric reach his goal because they will even the playing field for him by accommodating his needs and differences to provide succesful writing to his assignments for English and Civics.
